Las Vegas was an unlikely vacation spot for us: my husband wouldn’t be caught dead buying a lottery ticket, and I stopped wearing spike heels ten years ago. But Internet ads offering “rooms for $39” proved as irresistible as the two free round-trip tickets our frequent flyer miles earned us, and we saw them as signs of our good luck and of fortunes to come.
