Two Poems

Trident and Leviathan

The merchant Syrian who sold it claimed
whoever slept there dreamed as gods dream,
in unearthly colors unmoored from scene
and sequence; that a sleeper in the bed of beds
was sometimes Neptune, sometimes Jonah
thrown with pleasant company into a buoyant rest;
that in an aqueous slumber prayers
are magnified and echo till you know not
whether you are speaking or being spoken to.
