a back-mirrored knickknack shelf
rescued from the family’s free-for-all estate
sale at the end of everything, was & still is
filled with porcelain cows & cats caught
yawning, the glass canoe & the crystal shoe
&, they say, the shadows of people climbing
in & out at all hours, the sailors who came
& lifted a grandfather out of his deathbed
