I met Barnetta in Brooklyn before Brooklyn was cool. She was always in motion. She had a big laugh, a Nashville drawl, and she sometimes acted in crazy Off-Off Broadway dramas. In those days I was writing poetry while taking care of my new baby, and Barnetta seemed to know when I needed time to read or write or clean the apartment in peace.
