I'm impressed with the idea of "martyr." This young kid martyring himself in amends--so touching and macho-scary. The love he shows is remarkable. And ouch--the beatings! Penance, amends--well done.

The portrait of violence in this story is one of the most vibrant and vivid I've read. I found myself retreating to the fetal position during some of the beatings. Great cathartic ending as well.
