It has long been my contention that Boyle's novel Riven Rock is one of the finest in the English language. He has a brilliant touch with period work, such as noticing this varnished spindle on a chair, that shiver of a cold horse's flank. This excerpt from San Miguel makes me think he is onto another "finest."
What a treat. Such a vivid story.
