In 1949 an eighteen year old could enlist for one year active duty and six years in the active reserve. I was fortunate enough not to be called up from the reserves to go to Korea. James Salter and I are probably about the sane age, I'm 83. Having just enjoyed the twenty-seven photographs of Andrew Southam and the illuminating quotes I am inspired to continue my efforts in writing. One of the best is: "The power to change one's life comes from a paragraph, a lone remark."
The obvious love between Kay Eldredge and James Salter is akin to a six word story I wrote about my wife, Ann. "Her gift to me. Herself. Forever."
