Honestly, I've had the same excitement when a foreign voice tried to speak through 12 inches of foam to help me put my computer into working order . . . your story is so humorous!

I loved the way it came down to the most wonderful thing of all--your mother's voice saying to you, "Type A."
Such a lucky little writer-to-be, with a wonderful ear for sounds of all kinds (that selectric IBM, what a sound! I loved hearing it as a friend typed her successful children's stories on it.). You make me want to write essays--yours is as rich as memoir, and very much like one. In fact, reading you, I thought--I didn't know you were allowed to have so much fun with words and such a free flow of associations and memories. What would I do on my lonesome island, without Narrative?
