Beautiful, delightful story, especially given the turn of events in the southwest. Indeed as humans we have the propensity to take things for granted and then, when the affliction arrives, we act like we didn't see it coming. I love the quote from the son Mickey, "But you can't bleed a stone." So true. I enjoyed the dialogue between the family. Great read made me think more, which at times is a scary thing.
This story was brilliant in its fine assessment of simple, human characteristics that make us laugh while also forcing us to ponder the 'larger' issues. Loved the narrative!
