An Essay

I have long been an advocate of normalizing relations with Cuba, but now that President Obama has made the initial overture, I am dismayed by the Castro regime's unrealistic demands: returning Gitmo to Cuba and accepting Cuba as a country which will never give up a communist government (for which we can spend a hundred dollars on rum and cigars). Meanwhile, Raul Castro ignores what he knows to be the wishes of the Cuban people: a free democracy. To give up unwarranted power is too big a sacrifice for the Castros. I now wonder why we should even try.
