An Essay
by Catherine RavenDark hawk-sized birds are circling overhead with their wings raised and their “fingers” spread wide. Bending my neck backward, I try to spot their telltale red heads, but I know who they are anyway. It’s midday and no one’s moving in this record-breaking heat except me and those turkey vultures. They think I’m about to keel over. Vultures are scavengers, but they prefer their meat fresh.
