Makes me feel better about going to Europe to bum around instead of going to grad school in comp lit--which I almost did. I learned more in those nine months of travel than I would have reading Latin and shriveling up!

Why does it seem that this would be an even more daring decision now?

After decades of resolving on every New Year's Eve to quit smoking, drinking, and drugging, I finally followed the advice of a fellow slouch. "Never make New Year's resolutions," he told me one January first, while sharing a joint. Thereupon, I resolved never to make New Year's resolutions. Now I have been smokeless, clean, and sober for twelve years.
