Misunderstanding reviews, though, weren't the only reasons Hardy quit novel writing; rheumatism in his hands made poetry writing more feasible. Of course, a lot of critics hated Hardy's going back to poetry, too, though he was more able to express metaphysical views without criticism from the masses in that form (remember "Hap"?).
I love JUDE, especially that scene with Jude in the pub challenging university students at Latin recitation--remember Will Hunting doing that?
