What a masterpiece! Mansfield leads the reader on; you don't quite know where you're going, but everything seems to be just fine (as Miss Brill would say). Then suddenly, but slyly, she breaks your heart.
Inside the head of Miss Brill; what a fine place and yet so sad. She feels at home but is out of place. With Mansfield's characters, we follow their thoughts and then realize their world is not the real world. Or is it? All her stories are wonderful in this way.
