I was thinking of O Henry, rather than Twain, but as I continued to read, Twain makes sense too . . . and perhaps a touch of Flannery O'Connor. A humble, sad, yet beautiful drama of people trying to make it.

I loved how this story could take place at any time or in any place. Some things never change.
