I know and admire Wolff's work, so I clicked on this. It is such a fine essay. Elegant, dense prose, clear and thick with meaning. I'll be getting some Bowles.
Thanks, Mr. Wolff. As soon as I finish the novel I'm currently reading, I will go up in my attic where The Sheltering Sky has been sleeping unread for a couple of decades. Great piece!

Fine piece. Mr. Wolff, in your estimation, how many of Bowles's stories would be published today if submitted to a major U. S. publisher by an unknown author?
I can't stop thinking about this. Wolff's delineation of Bowles is equally austere and sensuous.
