Bill Smoot, a finalist in Narrative’s 2023 Fall Story Contest, is the author of Conversations with Great Teachers and the novel Love: A Story. He earned a BA from Purdue University and a PhD in philosophy from Northwestern University. A lifelong educator, he teaches with the Prison University Project at San Quentin Prison and at the Osher Institute for Lifelong Learning at the University of California, Berkeley. Raised in Maysville, Kentucky, he lives in Berkeley.
