Blaise Pascal (1623–1662) was a prodigy in science and mathematics and a Catholic theologian who embraced an ascetic lifestyle, dedicating his later years to quiet theological reflection. T. S. Eliot described him during this period as “a man of the world among ascetics, and an ascetic among men of the world.”
