David Gavin, a native Irish speaker from Galway, Ireland, earned a BA from Portland State University, where he was awarded the Academy of American Poets Prize, and an MFA from the University of Arkansas. He taught English at Bilkent University, Ankara, Turkey, and until his retirement, at Des Moines Area Community College.
