John Gardner

John Gardner (1933–1982) was an author, teacher, and critic whose best-known novels include The Sunlight Dialogues, winner of the National Book Critics Circle Award, and Grendel, a retelling of Beowulf from the monster’s point of view. He was born in Batavia, New York, and taught English, Anglo-Saxon, and creative writing at Oberlin, Chico State, San Francisco State, Southern Illinois University, Bennington, and SUNY–Binghamton. Gardner’s other works include The Art of Fiction, the story collection The Art of Living, the epic narrative poem Jason and Medeia, and a biography, The Life and Times of Chaucer, as well as various children’s books. He died in a motorcycle accident in 1982.
