Katherine Anne Porter

Katherine Anne Porter (1890–1980) was known for her flawless prose and political sensibility. Born in Texas, she suffered the early loss of her mother and was fifteen when she married the first of four husbands. In the 1920s and ’30s she enjoyed a reputation as one of America’s most distinguished writers, celebrated for her short stories “Flowering Judas,” “Pale Horse, Pale Rider,” and “The Leaning Tower.” Her novel, Ship of Fools, was an instant success, and for her Collected Stories she received the Pulitzer Prize in 1966.
