Ken Babbs had his first psychedelic experience when he was six, tripping on the black-and-white tiles in his grandparents’ bathroom. Later, at Stanford University’s graduate writing program, Babbs met Ken Kesey; after serving as a Marine Corps helicopter pilot in Vietnam, he joined Kesey’s Merry Band of Pranksters for the now-fabled journey on the bus Furthur. For forty-three years, he and Kesey collaborated on writing and performance art. The story here is excerpted from a novel Babbs drafted in the 1960s.
