Madeline DeFrees

Madeline DeFrees was born in Ontario, Oregon, and at the age of seventeen entered the convent of the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary, where for thirty-eight years she was Sister Mary Gilbert. She is the author of eight volumes of poetry, including Blue Dusk: New & Selected Poems, 1951–2001 (Copper Canyon Press, 2001), and two memoirs of her life as a nun. DeFrees has taught widely and directed the MFA program at the University of Massachusetts.
