P. G. Wodehouse (1881–1975) is celebrated as the greatest comic author of the twentieth century. In more than seventy novels and two hundred short stories, he created unforgettably eccentric characters such as Bertie Wooster and his valet, Jeeves; Lord Emsworth and his beloved Empress of Blandings; Psmith, the monocled dandy; Uncle Fred, the disgrace to the peerage; and Mr. Mulliner, the irrepressible pub raconteur of family stories. Wodehouse also wrote lyrics for musical comedies and at one time had five musicals running simultaneously on Broadway.
