Sindiwe Magona

Sindiwe Magona writes of an impoverished childhood in South Africa and of struggles under apartheid. Educated by correspondence as a single mother of three and domestic servant with no fixed home, she has written more than a hundred children’s books, stage plays, novels, and short story collections. Living, Loving and Lying Awake at Night was selected as one of Africa’s 100 Best Books of the Twentieth Century. Among many prizes are the Lifetime Achievement Award for contribution to South African Literature; the Order of iKhamanga, the highest Presidential Award in South Africa; and the Imbokodo Award, shared with Nadine Gordimer.
