William Faulkner (1897–1962) was a towering figure in American literature, a Nobel laureate whose reputation and influence rest on such celebrated novels as The Sound and the Fury, As I Lay Dying, Light in August, and Absolom, Absolom! He also worked in Hollywood, famously on the Bogart-Bacall film To Have and Have Not. A portion of his Nobel money donated in support of new fiction writers was used to establish the prestigious PEN/Faulkner Award. Faulkner died following a riding accident and is buried in Oxford, Mississippi.
