Sir Winston Churchill (1874–1965) was one of the greatest wartime leaders of the twentieth century, a stirring speaker whose orations exalted the value of all humankind. As a writer, he was prolific, and his works include a novel, two biographies, memoirs, and several histories. Among his most celebrated works are the six-volume memoir The Second World War, the four-volume history covering the period from Caesar’s invasion of Britain to the beginning of World War I, A History of the English-Speaking Peoples, and an outstanding collection of speeches, Blood, Sweat and Tears. In 1953 Churchill was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature.
